The Friends basically succeed at every turn, which while I appreciate as a fan of darker-themed stories, did start to annoy me just slightly. My only real gripe is that the Kenji faction never really succeeds at much until the very end. I’d read a whole spin-off about her newfound bowling career with Kamisama. She kind of annoyed me when she was introduced, but grew on me a lot later on. Koizumi was my surprise favorite character though.

She became the de-facto leader and symbol of hope the series relied on, but I also liked that she was never an ice queen and/or changed immensely from the person we’re introduced to after the initial time skip. The first few pages of the Perfect Editions which I read always listed Kenji as the hero, but I’d argue that Kanna was much more of one throughout. The jumps back to childhood, while slightly redundant towards the end, was a great way to tell the story and give the characters more depth. But what probably impressed me the most was how fluidly he was able to continually add new characters and make them feel natural in this world. It’s mystery surrounding the Friends and THE Friend was super interesting to see develop early on. I think it’s beyond impressive how Naoki Urasawa was able to keep me so engaged in this story for so long. Basically read the whole series over the last few weeks, and most of it over this last week. The jumps back to childhood, while What a ride this was.
